Holiday Cheer!

Riverview staff voted to bring donations of Toys for Tots this year to staff holiday celebration rather than exchanging gifts.  Riverview students sang holiday carols at the Dayton Senior Center. FES winter celebration with EL students and families.  They had a potluck, a surprise visit from Santa, an art project and a game of unwrapping presents with oven mitts.  Each grade participated in their own unwrapping game and they did a round for the parents too!  Out of 42 total students, they had 37 in attendance and 12 families. Everyone had a great time getting together - some of them meeting each other for the first time!!  EL teacher, Kristen Anders-Garcia discussed the upcoming WIDA testing in January and how proud she is of the growth she has seen this year in listening, speaking, reading and writing!  FES Holiday Concert!

Lyon County Schools receive grants to teach students how to garden

Check out this great feature done on Silver Stage Elementary and Middle Schools who were part of a group of schools to receive $10,000 in grants to support school garden efforts.  The grants come from the Nevada Dept. of Agriculture.  Also on the list to receive funding were Fernley, Riverview and Sutro Elementary Schools! The Polar Express by SES 4th Grade Students!

Sonya Kirby's 4th grade class held its annual musical performance of The Polar Express on December 19th.  The class presented the play to its fellow classmates in three performances throughout the day.  Parents and staff were also welcome to attend.  The students in Mrs. Kirby's class look forward to putting on this event every year.  The mural that appears as the backdrop for their play is 30 years old and was a gift to Mrs. Kirby - it continues to serve as the perfect complement to the students' outstanding performance!    

DIS Students Build Shed!

The DIS 7th and 8th grade Gifted and Talented/Acceleration class designed and built a shed to store garden tools and supplies.  They started out designing popsicle shed models and progressed to developing the blueprints and then building a 4 by 4 foot shed.  The skills of using a hand saw, hammer and power drill ranged from semi-experienced to no experience at the beginning and progressed to all students being able to saw a 2x4, hammer in framing nails and using a power drill to attach siding. 

SVS Annual Christmas Concert!

Smith Valley School held their annual Christmas concert this year last Thursday, December 14th.  SkillsUSA photography students provided a chance to have students photographed with their favorite Santa.  Music teacher, Maren Leal directed the program, tea and cookies and candy canes made for a magical evening.

Lego Robotics!

Lego Robotics recently held its competition for grades 4th through 8th grade at Eagle Valley Middle School in Carson City. Riverview Elementary School (RES) had three teams compete: Crooked Gears Soaring Lego Robotic Pieces Fluffy Narwhals Dayton Intermediate School (DIS) sent their team, D.I.R.T (Dayton Intermediate Robotics Team) Silverland Middle School (SMS) sent the Guardians of the Bricks! Crooked Gears from RES,  D.I.R.T from DIS and Guardians of the Bricks from SMS were invited to the next competition that will be held in Reno on January 27, 2018! All teams had to give 3 presentations in the morning to judges they did not know. The presentations were as follows: Community project CORE values How the robot was programmed and why The afternoon was the robot competition where each team programmed their robot to perform certain tasks for points. CES Housing Project Presentations to Local Leaders!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Fernley, NV Students from Mrs. Bearden's and Mrs. Isbell's fourth grade classes at Cottonwood Elementary School have been working on a problem based learning unit culminating in the design of a housing project.  The student groups presented their plans to a local business panel, including Fernley Mayor - Roy Edgington, local Realtor - Tammy Dittman, Dr. Brandolyn Thran and Fernley Councilman - Dan McCassie on Wednesday, December 13th.  

Sutro 6th Grade Spelling Bee!

On Monday, December 11th,  Sutro Elementary School 6th graders competed in the annual spelling bee!
