Sutro Elementary Takes Walking Tour of Dayton

May 7, 2017 - 4th graders from Sutro Elementary School learned about the history of their hometown on their walking field trip through Old Town Dayton.  They explored Rock Point Mill where miners brought their ore from the mines, the Firehouse with its first mechanized fire truck, the Jail with its mail order cells and the Dayton Museum which was the building that housed the very first school in Dayton.  They also explored the Community Center which was the original Dayton High School, saw the Pony Express Wall and wandered through the historic Dayton Cemetery.  Sixty-one students plus teachers and chaperones all had a great time.   SES expresses many thanks to the Dayton Historical Society for putting this together for them!

Lyon County’s Wayne Workman Named 2021 Nevada Association of School Superintendents (NASS) State Superintendent of the Year

  Lyon County, NV, September 14, 2020 – Lyon County School District’s (LCSD) Superintendent Wayne Workman has been named the 2021 Nevada Superintendent of the Year by the Nevada Association of School Superintendents (NASS).  NASS is a statewide nonprofit educational organization which strives to provide support to leaders of Nevada’s eighteen school districts and more than seven hundred and twenty public schools.   Workman was appointed as LCSD Superintendent during the November 2014 board meeting and began his tenure on July 1, 2015.  Workman launched his twenty-two year career in education after graduating from Utah State University in 1998 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Physical/Health Education and Athletic Training.  He later earned his Master’s Degree in Administration and Leadership from the University of Phoenix in 2006. SVS Evacuation Site for Tamarack Fire

SVS is currently being used as an evacuation site for residents impacted by the Tamarack Fire. Over 100 people and their pets are being housed on campus. As additional evacuations are expected, various entities are providing for the needs of the evacuees including food, water, sleeping accommodations, etc.  Thank you to our staff at Smith Valley School for being so accommodating and to our brave firefighters and emergency personnel.  Please keep those impacted by this fire in your thoughts - we certainly are!
