FHS student attends JAG Legislative Day

On Wednesday, March 20, the 47 JAG (Jobs for America's Graduates) programs from around Nevada were able to send one student to take part in a day at the capitol. Priscilla Winningham was chosen to attend from Fernley High School (FHS) and she did an amazing job representing FHS. The students had a busy day with a full schedule. They were able to sit on the floor in the Senate and Assembly with their respective senators and assembly person. Priscilla sat with Senator Settlemeyer. They were introduced on the floor and were able to witness firsthand a congressional session. Students were also able to meet with a Supreme Court Judge and his clerks in the courtroom. The day ended with the governor. Students were able to share their story of how the JAG program is and has helped them. The governor then shared some thoughts with the students - Governor Sisolak asked them to remember two words, believe and choice. Ladyhawks Varsity Softball team wins Hawthorne Tournament

The Silver Stage High School girl's softball team came home as champions this weekend from the Hawthorne tournament. Congratulations, ladies!  The SSHS softball and baseball teams head to Lovelock today for a 4PM match and are home this Saturday for a 10AM match.

Nevada Thespian Outstanding Administrator of the Year for 2018 -2019

Over the weekend, Assistant Principal Brooke Keller at Fernley High School was named the Nevada Thespian Outstanding Administrator of the Year for 2018 -2019 school year.  She was nominated by FHS students. FHS staff is happy she was recognized for all of her hard work and dedication to Fernley High School’s staff and students. Keller has been a member of the Fernley community since 1983 when they moved here to raise their child in a small community. Keller has been a member of the Lyon County School District family since 1991 when she started as a classroom aide. Her three children graduated from Fernley High School and she has held the utmost respect for the teachers and the school.  She has been at Fernley High School for over five years.  Keller says, "I love coming to work every day. I get to work with students and their families in the most exciting time of their lives.  We watch our students walk in our doors as timid freshmen and walk out in four years as confident

Yerington High School HOSA heads to State this weekend!

YHS HOSA students have qualified in the top 5 of their competitive events.  From left to right: Harely Guerrer, 10th grade competed in the Nutrition knowledge test, Joe Page, 12th grade competed in Medical Law and Ethics and Rebecca Rand, 9th grade competed in medical reading.  All three students will find out where they placed at the State leadership conference. YHS HOSA also has students competing in nursing assistant, EMT, Forensics Medicine, HOSA Bowl and outstanding HOSA chapter. 

YHS students participate in essay contest ceremony

The Fleet Reserve Association, Sierra-Tahoe Branch and Unit 137 held its annual essay contest on Patriotism.   A luncheon was held Saturday, March 9 at the Veterans Hall in Carson City honoring the winners. Five YHS students were in attendance.   Students include Joe Page, Erika Ramirez, Shania Bebo, Alexus Bodenstein and Kaylee Palmer. The Sierra-Tahoe Branch - 137 was founded in Minden, 1994. Since then the branch has been servicing the interests of members of the sea services living in and around the Greater Carson City Area. The branch actively supports various area activities that enhance the well being of the active and veteran enlisted members of the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard both nationally and within its service area. A few of the recent Branch activities include providing financial support to Nevada Honor Flight, Suicide Prevention and each year sponsoring the Annual Americanism Essay Contest in area schools. Fernley Intermediate student returns to Nevada Geography Bee for the second year Fernley, NV, March 8, 2019 – Fernley Intermediate School (FIS) is sending 6th grade student Phillip Rosas to the National Geographic GeoBee for the second year in a row.  Last year, Rosas won fifth place and this year he plans to beat that, “My goal is to get first but I really just want to beat my 5th place spot.”  Rosas is an outstanding student all around and likes all subjects but has really dedicated a lot of extra time to excelling in geography. In preparation for the GeoBee, Rosas spends 3 to 4 hours every evening taking practice tests on the computer and that doesn’t even compare to the time he spends on his weekends.  Last year was his first time at State and he says traveling to Las Vegas and competing in front of the very large crowd was nerve-wracking but he believes it has really improved his public speaking.  Principal Rob Jacobson agrees, “He is very talented at answering his qu

CES Reading Week!

March 4th to March 8th was reading week at CES.  Students celebrated reading all week long with guest readers, dress-up days and the 1st grade students even had the treat of being read to by their 4th grade peers. “The more that you read, the more things you will know. Fernley Intermediate students fulfill pledge to Veterans Guest House Representatives By David Perry, Fernley Intermediate School Teacher Fernley Intermediate School Falcon Leadership students present a check fulfilling a pledge to raise $1000 to Veterans Guest House representatives. Fernley Intermediate School Falcon Leadership and Veterans Guest House staff. Fernley, NV, February 28, 2019 –  The Fernley Intermediate School (FIS) Falcon Leadership students presented a $570 check to representatives of Veterans Guest House fulfilling their pledge to raise $1000 for the organization.  In October of 2018, this group of 5 th  and 6 th  grade leadership students met and determined that with the help of the entire FIS student body and staff, they could raise $1000 to support veterans.  The students chose Veterans Guest House because they were impressed with their mission of providing housing to veterans and their families who are seeking medical treatment in the Reno-Spark
