A change in perspective
During one of Heather Snyder’s English Language classes at Fernley High, she had Vadym Proshchenko, a FHS exchange student from Ukraine as a guest in the room. Vadym interviewed the class about coming to the United States. He wanted to get their perspectives on coming here with little to no English. Vadym asked questions like: What did they expect vs reality and what advantages they now have vs the country they came from. They had a diverse group of students representing Marshall Islands, Mexico and Japan. The students were really interested and even asked Vadym questions about school and living in the Ukraine. “Truly everyone can learn if we just listen to the perspectives of others. Today was a great day!” says teacher Heather Snyder
Vadym represents the FLEX (future leaders exchange) scholarship program. He earned a full year of education here in America. While here he will be sharing his culture as well as volunteering and making a difference here in the community.
FHS also has another FLEX student from Ukraine as well as a student from Spain and Italy. In Yerington there is a FLEX student from Romania.
