October's Excitement!

October was National Farm to School Month and the Nevada Department of Agriculture listed Riverview Elementary as the Garden of the Month!

"Riverview Elementary School in Dayton, Nev., was a FY18 School Garden Grant recipient.  Since March, they have created a unique school garden space, incorporated Agriculture in the Classroom lessons to meet education standards and have incorporated their school grown cabbage into their cafeteria!"

Dayton High School held its annual Bite of Reality.  Stephanie Fitch says it is an “adulting 101” simulation put on by Greater Nevada Credit Union.  During this simulation, students are given an identity, complete with salary, bills and a family.  Students need to budget their money, make financial decisions and end the activity without bankrupting themselves.  This is all done on their phones via the Bite of Reality app.  Parent and bank volunteers try to “upsell” them on bigger and better housing, cars, entertainment packages, groceries, etc.  Kids have to learn to say no to sales pitches and stay on budget.  The best part are the pop ups with “life moments” such as “you need new tires” or “you got a bonus at work…enjoy the extra cash.”

The kids say it’s frustrating, fun and a valuable activity.  This is all part of our Life Skills Project, in which students research college and career, learn about budgeting and the expenses of adulthood, and how to deliver a job-winning interview.
