The HATS ON for Juvenile Diabetes that DIS leadership ran this year raised $401 dollars, and there is a Dayton child who will receive the funds to help cover the cost of attending the Diabetes Camp.

DHS Marine Science students taught DES and DIS students for a project worth 60% of their final.  Students chose the Marine Science topic based on what they had learned throughout the year, and then created lessons for students at the different schools.  Some of the statements from students when returning to DHS:

·         It was amazing! It was pretty fun when they connected with us when we were making jokes – they were really enthusiastic and enjoyed the slime.
·         They really got into the shark dissection and playing with the organs and putting their fingers in its throat.  Then they played with the clamping sharks we made them.
·         They were really great kids and I liked how they thanked us.
·         The class was fun and they remembered all our facts!  They were so smart and very interactive – we even discussed ocean safety.
·         That was the best field trip I have had!
·         I wouldn’t want to be a teacher . . . it is too hard.
·         It was easier working with the kids than I thought it would be.
·         They had so much energy – it was fun to watch them!
·         I would rather take that type of final any day – instead of a paper one!

Students could easily see how their actions affected and impacted others based on their own preparation and the teaching of others.  They enjoyed teaching students and unanimously voted for a project final over a paper final in the future.

Shout out to Jerri Kearns!
From a staff member at RES - "Jerri Kerns is a 3rd grade teacher and learning strategist at RES. Aside from being a member of the SPP team, ICAT team, and everyone’s go-to gal, Jerri spends the entire school year “collecting” – and by collecting I mean, getting up early, waiting in line, paying out of her own pocket, and storing – books for kids to take home over the summer. This is year she collected over 5,000 books and sent every student at Riverview home with at least ten new books for their personal libraries. These are the quiet acts of service that are typical of Jerri. Although she never asks for it, this kind of educator deserves a little bit of the “limelight” – in my opinion anyway."
