Dayton Intermediate School Theater is back in session! The students performed a few plays in late January via Facebook Live for all of their fans to see and enjoy.  The plays performed were "Once Upon a Zoom" by Edith Weiss and "The Boy Who Cried Werewolf" by Daniel Guyton. Even with all the obstacles and adjustments that needed to be made, the students did a fantastic job! Way to go DIS Theater!  The DIS Theatre class is led by National Board Certified Teacher Lindsay Etter!   At Silver Stage Elementary, LCSD has the pleasure of having an incredible dual immersion language program for 3 and 4 year olds.  The dual immersion program engages students English and American Sign Language (ASL) where students with and without hearing impairments can learn and grow together.  Recently, the class has been learning all about winter.  LCSD Superintendent Wayne Workman read The Snowy Day to the class - a book quite fitting for the week we have had!

 One of our very own educators had her photo selected for the cover of Nevada Magazine! Debbie Sutherland, 3rd grad teacher at Sutro Elementary School took the following picture in Dayton, NV.  The photo was featured on the cover of Nevada Magazine's Winter 2021 edition.

Students who wished to participate were tasked with creating a written piece on the topic, “Why it is Important for Americans to Vote?”   When the contest was over Fernley Intermediate School had the honor of having three winners. Third place went to Emerlynn Roscoe who received a $20 gift card from Steve’s Ice Cream. Second place went to Yesenia Marquez who received a $30 Amazon gift card. First place went to Ainsley Blackorby who received a $50 Amazon gift card.   Audrina Banta, Smith Valley FFA Student Turkey Business Local FFA Member Receives Grant from Farm Credit Smith, NV, December 15, 2020 – A $1,000 Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) grant has been awarded to Audrina Banta of Smith Valley FFA in Smith, Nevada by Farm Credit. These grants are designed to help FFA members create or expand Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) projects, a requirement that all FFA members must complete. An SAE requires FFA members to create and operate an agriculture related business, work at an agriculture-related business or conduct an agricultural research experience. Upon completion, FFA members must submit a comprehensive report regarding their career development experience. With so many uncertainties for the students living in a pandemic, it was reassuring to see an annual tradition continue.  Smith Valley FFA holds a turkey processing event every year before the Thanksgiving holiday.  The Turkey Business is just one of the many student-run businesses out of Smith Valley School's (SVS) FFA program.  Audrina Banta, 7th grade student at Smith Valley Middle School, is the student in charge of the Turkey Business and the turkey processing event held on Friday, November 20th.  This year, Banta sold 36 turkeys, one of which was pardoned by SVS Principal Duane Mattice.   The largest turkey this year was a whopping 30lbs.   Banta's business is standing tradition with many repeat customers who count on Smith Valley FFA to provide the turkey at their Thanksgiving feast.  Banta and the FFA students handle every aspect of the processing from death to scalding, plucking, evisceration, cleaning and packaging.  These stud...

Check out the awesome virtual AND hands-on activities that Dayton and Fernley Elementary Schools have brought to their students. Dayton Elementary School (DES) hosted a reading of It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown on Facebook Live and Zoom.  Prior to the live event, the students were able to visit the DES Pumpkin Patch and pick a pumpkin to take home and decorate.  All students in cohorts A and B plus full-distance students had the opportunity to pick out a pumpkin to decorate at home and bring it back to DES for display in the office.  This event was one of DES's family engagement nights this year. Fernley Elementary School has partnered with Sierra Nevada Journeys to host virtual family STEM nights the second Tuesday of each month.  This month, the students used spaghetti and marshmallows to try and build the tallest tower.  The event was available via Zoom to the students. Nevada Teacher of the Year Finalist in LCSD In September, 2020, Lyon County School District was proud to see one of its own as a 2021 Finalist for the Nevada State Teacher of the Year award – Mrs. Lynn Jeka from Yerington Elementary School (YES).  The recognition comes months after she was nominated to apply for the Teacher of the Year award.  Jeka’s incredible abilities as an educator are rooted in her educational philosophy.  She believes that “education should be equitable for all students, regardless of race, gender, language, abilities, previous experiences or geographic location,” that “education should serve a purpose in developing college or career ready, informed citizens and address every student’s needs and interests” and that “schools should be working towards development of the whole child, not just instilling academic content knowledge.”   Jeka came to Lyon County School District (LCSD) in 2004 after completing her second Bachelor’s Degree in Eleme...

 Have you ever wondered what would it be like to be Principal for a Day?  For Saxon Madsen at Dayton Intermediate School this question became a reality this week.   Saxon was the top seller in a popcorn fundraiser where he raised over $1000 for the Parent Faculty Club and the top prize was switching places with the Dayton Intermediate School principal Mr. Kranjcec. While Saxon was busy running a school, Mr. Kranjcec was in Saxon's class taking his place and re-living his time in junior high school. Saxon said his favorite part of his day was delivering donuts to his staff!

  Lyon County, NV, September 14, 2020 – Lyon County School District’s (LCSD) Superintendent Wayne Workman has been named the 2021 Nevada Superintendent of the Year by the Nevada Association of School Superintendents (NASS).  NASS is a statewide nonprofit educational organization which strives to provide support to leaders of Nevada’s eighteen school districts and more than seven hundred and twenty public schools.   Workman was appointed as LCSD Superintendent during the November 2014 board meeting and began his tenure on July 1, 2015.  Workman launched his twenty-two year career in education after graduating from Utah State University in 1998 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Physical/Health Education and Athletic Training.  He later earned his Master’s Degree in Administration and Leadership from the University of Phoenix in 2006.
