Fernley Intermediate student returns to Nevada Geography Bee for the second year

Fernley, NV, March 8, 2019 – Fernley Intermediate School (FIS) is sending 6th grade student Phillip Rosas to the National Geographic GeoBee for the second year in a row.  Last year, Rosas won fifth place and this year he plans to beat that, “My goal is to get first but I really just want to beat my 5th place spot.”  Rosas is an outstanding student all around and likes all subjects but has really dedicated a lot of extra time to excelling in geography.

In preparation for the GeoBee, Rosas spends 3 to 4 hours every evening taking practice tests on the computer and that doesn’t even compare to the time he spends on his weekends.  Last year was his first time at State and he says traveling to Las Vegas and competing in front of the very large crowd was nerve-wracking but he believes it has really improved his public speaking.  Principal Rob Jacobson agrees, “He is very talented at answering his questions when he is up there. Even when he doesn’t know the answer he keeps his composure and talks through an educated guess – which usually ends up being right.”

The GeoBee is available for 4th through 8th grade students.  Rosas plans to continue to participate through his 8th grade year and continue to improve.  He has also inspired his younger sister to participate.  Also competing in the GeoBee from Lyon County School District is Madison Vegas, 8th grade student at Silverland Middle School, and Floyd Thomas, 8th grade student at Yerington Intermediate School.  Good luck to all of our contestants – we know you will make LCSD proud!

The National Geographic GeoBee State Competition will be held at Faith Lutheran Middle and High School in Las Vegas on March 29th.  The state champion will advance to the National Geographic GeoBee Championship May 19th through the 22nd at the National Geographic Society headquarters in Washington, D.C. The national champion will receive a $25,000 college scholarship with $1,000 in cash and a trip to the Galápagos Islands!
