Yerington High School Unity Day

On December 8, 2017, Yerington High School student body president, Darwin Snyder, student senate and leadership held its annual Unity Day Celebration.  The day was kicked off by Yerington High School alumnus, Cody Villalobos.  Cody is currently working on Justin Moore's team as a videographer - yes, that is Justin Moore the country music super star!  Cody spoke to YHS student body and staff...

The day was followed by break-out sessions led by JC leaders that consisted of writing service letters, creating bracelets by interacting with other groups, making ornaments for the school Christmas tree and discussing ways to create positive change in their school.  A portion of the break-out sessions were also led by the keynote speaker, Stu Cabe.  These team-building activities aimed to develop ideas about what life is really like when everyone notices and accepts each other’s differences. By breaking students into interactive groups and talking and listening to each other, Stu brought all students closer together by kid’s helping each other out.

Next on the agenda was the basketball special olympics game.  The teams were made up of students, regular and special education.  During halftime, YHS thanked its many guests for attending and supporting Unity Day.

Guests consisted of:
Eduardo Martinez, Regional Representative for Senator Dean Heller
George Dini, Mayor - City of Yerington
Ken Gray, Lyon County Commissioner
Jim Wheeler, Nevada State Assembly
Troy Villines, Lyon County Assessor
Holly Villines, Lyon County School District Board Trustee
Kurt Englehart, Regional Representative for Senator Catherine Cortez Masto
Donna Cupp, Communications Officer - Lyon County Sheriff's Office
Many members of Lyon County Sheriff's Office
Jeff Page, Lyon County Manager
Wayne Workman, Lyon County School District Superintendent
Laurie Thom, Yerington Paiute Tribe Chairman
Robert Kirk, Parent

The day was concluded with words from Stu Cabe who spoke about what it takes to succeed. While using his past experiences, combined with his animated persona, Stu created an atmosphere that left kids pondering about what they can do next in the school to make a positive difference.

WHAT A DAY!
We cannot wait until next year.  Great  job, YHS - you did a great job!
