Sierra Nevada Journeys Visits Smith Valley Elementary School
The outdoor science program, Sierra Nevada Journeys, has been in Smith Valley Elementary's 1st through 6th grade classrooms this week giving students hands-on learning opportunities in science. These lessons directly tie into the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) reflected in the FOSS kits - the Full Option Science System (FOSS) is meant to engage students in science through active learning. The Classrooms Unleashed program by Sierra Nevada Journeys is in its 7th year of teaching to 3rd, 4th and 5th graders and is in its beginning years of providing 1st and 2nd grades. The teaching program usually consists of three days in the classroom and one field trip, but due to the cold weather this week, the students had to pass on the field trip day.
When asked, "What was the neatest thing you learned this week?"
One student responded, "SCIENCE!"
We couldn't have summed it better ourselves!
