WELCOME BACK DEPUTY WRIGHT FOR HIS SECOND YEAR AS SRO

What is a SRO?  The SRO is a deputy of the Lyon County Sheriff's Office (LCSO) whose primary job responsibility is within the school community.  The goal of this position, which is attained through a partnership with LCSO, is to foster positive relationships with students through close contact.  The SRO position is in its second year in the Silver Springs schools and has seen a very positive impact leading to the creation of the SRO in Dayton and Fernley schools.

Today, we would like to introduce you to Deputy Timothy Wright.  Deputy Wright joined the Silver Springs schools last year for the pilot program in Lyon County Schools.

Deputy Wright came to Lyon County from Northern Arizona.  His first job was with what is now Wild West Motors in Yerington, but he says that ever since he was twenty-five years old he had always wanted to be in law enforcement.

In 2008, Deputy Wright joined LCSO initially working out in the Yerington area, but has been working in the Silver Springs community since 2010 when he bought a home in the neighborhood.

When asked about "why the SRO position" Deputy Wright expressed to us that he asked for this position.  He says he saw a need for it in the community and wanted to be a part of the solution.  His goal coming in was to reach the youth of the community and to build rapport with them.  He says the cop uniform doesn't have to carry a negative image, and to the kids of Silver Stage elementary, middle and high school, it doesn't.  Deputy Wright now has to deal with the possibility that his uniform might get covered in little handprints or chocolate smudges from the hugs he receives.

When asked what has been his favorite part of the job, Deputy Wright responds, "all of it."  However, there is one student who has stood out to Deputy Wright because when he first came in as a SRO the student used to express that he disliked cops and did not care for him.  Deputy Wright would give the student his distance, greet him in passing and through his constant presence has now fostered a relationship with this student to the point where the student is constantly coming up to him and sharing their issues or thoughts.  This is one example of the many positive impacts that Deputy Wright and the other SROs are creating in the schools from the inside out.

Deputy Wright also expressed how much he has enjoyed working with and being around the Silver Springs administration and staff.  He shared his memory of the last day of school last year; whereas typically kids are throwing their homework to the wind and rushing home for the summer, he says he saw some kids cry and others express how much they wanted to stay in school longer.  Deputy Wright believes that the teachers and staff in the community are truly exceptional and really care about helping each student succeed.  We agree, LCSD is a special family and Silver Springs students and staff are a tight-knit community that stick together.

For fun, Deputy Wright enjoys playing the drums with his band - some of which are fellow officers.  He says they rock out in the garage and we hope he'll let us know next time they book a gig!

The Silver Springs community, students and staff and Lyon County are lucky to have such a neat community member and we’re even luckier to get to have him in our schools for the second year!
If you don't believe us, see it for yourself...
